Diablo 4 Loot 101: How to Read Item Grades
New to Diablo 4 loot? Learn what makes an S-grade item in Season 15. Scan any drop instantly at Stat Verdict for a verdict.
Diablo 4 throws so much loot at you that the biggest challenge isn't finding gear — it's knowing what's actually worth keeping. If you've ever stared at a drop wondering whether it's an upgrade or salvage fodder, this is for you. In Season 15 — Season of Hell's Legacy, the loot rules shifted enough that even returning players are second-guessing themselves. Let's break down how item grades work, what makes an item good, and the mistakes that quietly cost beginners their best crafting bases.
What S/A/B/C/D Grades Actually Mean
A letter grade is shorthand for one question: how much better does this make your character? Here's the plain-language version of each tier:
- S — Best in slot or close. Perfect or near-perfect affixes for your build, ideally with Greater Affixes stacked on the right stats. Equip it now.
- A — Excellent, minor flaws. Strong affixes, maybe one roll you'd re-roll. A real upgrade for almost anyone.
- B — Solid, situational. Good stats but not perfectly aligned to your build, or a great item for a different spec.
- C — Filler. Wearable while leveling, but you'll replace it fast.
- D — Weak. Wrong affixes, low rolls, no crafting upside. Salvage bait.
The catch: a grade only means something relative to a build. An item that's S-tier for a Physical Rogue can be D-tier for a Fire Sorcerer. Keep that in mind as we go.
Affix Quality, Greater Affixes, and Item Power
Three things drive an item's raw value.
Item Power (IP)
IP determines the ceiling on your affix rolls and your armor/damage numbers. Higher IP means bigger potential rolls. One number worth memorizing this season: 850 IP. Any Unique at 850+ can be crafted into a Mythic Unique in the Horadric Cube, so an otherwise unremarkable high-IP Unique can be a Mythic ingredient rather than trash.
Affix Quality
Affixes are the stat lines on your gear, and their value depends on your build. Damage multipliers, your core resource, cooldown reduction, and defensive layers matter more than flat stats that don't scale with your kit. And pay attention to one big Season 15 change: resistances were revalued. A single-element Resistance affix (like Fire Resistance or Cold Resistance) is now worth roughly seven times an All Resistance affix on equipment, Charms, and Tempering. All Resistance is no longer strictly better — if you need to cap one element for a specific fight or the current Prime Evil Splinter you're carrying, a single Resistance line does far more heavy lifting.
Greater Affixes (GAs)
Greater Affixes are the marked, boosted affixes that roll significantly higher than normal. An item with two or three GAs on the right stats is the backbone of an S-grade piece. They're also protected during a key Cube operation: the Affix Value Reroll rerolls your base affixes while leaving your Greater Affixes untouched. That means an item with perfect GAs but a garbage base roll isn't dead — it's recoverable. Since patch 3.2.1, you can even reroll the powers on Unique items and Unique Charms.
Reading all of this at a glance takes practice, and the numbers move every patch. If you'd rather not memorize breakpoints, this is exactly the moment to get a second opinion.
Screenshot your latest drop and check whether its Greater Affixes match your build before you decide to keep or salvage. Why Build Context Changes the Grade
This is the part beginners underestimate. The same item earns different grades on different characters.
Take an amulet rolling with Physical damage, Attack Speed, and a single Physical Resistance line. If you're a Rogue leaning into the Hatred (Mephisto) Splinter — which pushes Physical — that's a genuine S-tier candidate. Hand it to a Sorcerer running Terror (Diablo, Fire) and the Physical damage does nothing for your build; suddenly it's a C at best.
Legacy Uniques make this even trickier. Nine of them exist on both realms this season, and two are slot traps: Nemesis Bracers occupy your GLOVES slot, and Squirt's Blouse is a CHEST piece. Equip one without realizing it, and you've blocked a slot where you badly need affixes or armor. A slot trap can quietly drag your whole grade sheet down even if the Unique's power is strong.
The lesson: don't grade an item in a vacuum. Grade it against your class, your damage type, and the Prime Evil Splinter you're currently running through War Plans.
The Beginner Mistake That Hurts Most: Salvaging GA Crafting Bases
Here's the one that stings. New players tend to salvage anything that isn't a shiny Legendary or Unique — and that's a costly reflex in Season 15.
Magic and Rare items that roll with Greater Affixes are crafting candidates. Never salvage them. A Rare with two well-placed GAs can become a foundation you build up with Tempering and Masterworking, or a base you fix with an Affix Value Reroll. Toss it in the salvage bin and you've thrown away potential best-in-slot gear because it didn't have an orange border.
A few more habits worth building early:
- Check every Unique's IP. Anything 850+ is a Mythic Unique ingredient, even if its rolls look mediocre. All Uniques now drop with 2 guaranteed affixes and can drop at level 1 in any difficulty, so you'll see more of them than ever — evaluate, don't auto-scrap.
- Understand the Crafted tag. The 'Upgrade Direct Item to Mythic' craft is a clean 1:1 transfer that keeps your affixes, Tempering, and Masterworking — but it stamps a Crafted tag, and you can only equip one Crafted Mythic at a time. Jeweler and Blacksmith Mythics carry no tag and are unlimited, so plan around which piece deserves your single Crafted slot.
- Don't sleep on Soul Splinters. These eight new jewelry socketables (up to three equipped) each carry a boon and a liability. Read the liability every time — a Splinter that boosts damage but tanks a resistance can pull an S-grade piece down to a B once it's slotted.
Putting It All Together
Grades are just a fast answer to "is this better for me?" The inputs are Item Power for your ceiling, affix quality weighted to your build, and Greater Affixes as the difference between filler and best-in-slot. Remember that resistances were revalued — single-element lines now matter — that context flips grades between classes, that Nemesis Bracers and Squirt's Blouse steal slots, and above all that Magic and Rare items with Greater Affixes are crafting gold you should never salvage. Learn to spot those signals and you'll stop hoarding junk and start keeping the drops that actually push your character forward.
