Diablo 4 Item Power Caps Season 13: The Complete Guide

Item Power caps changed in Patch 3.0.3. Normal items cap at 850, Ancestral at 900, Mythic Unique at 925. Here's what that means for every piece of gear in your stash.

What Is Item Power and Why Does It Matter?

Item Power (IP) is the number on every piece of gear in Diablo IV. It determines the range your affixes can roll within — higher Item Power means higher possible stat values on that item. It is not a direct damage or defense number; it is a ceiling on how good your rolls can be.

This is why two items of the same type can feel completely different: a weapon at Item Power 750 and one at 900 roll their affixes from entirely different value pools. The higher-IP item has higher minimum and maximum possible rolls across every stat on it.

The Season 13 Item Power Caps (Patch 3.0.3)

Patch 3.0.3 raised the Item Power ceilings from Season 12. The current caps are:

  • Normal / Non-Ancestral items: ~850 — available at all difficulties. If your item is approaching 850, you are near the top of what non-Ancestral gear can offer.

  • Ancestral items: ~900 — Ancestral-quality items only drop in Torment difficulty. The 900 cap is the absolute ceiling for Legendary and Rare gear in Season 13.

  • Mythic Unique items: fixed 925 — Mythic Uniques (purple-bordered) always drop at exactly 925 Item Power. They are the only items that bypass the Ancestral cap entirely.

What About Unique Items?

Standard Unique items (gold-bordered) bypass the normal Item Power caps and can roll above 850 outside of Torment. However, their affixes are partially fixed — as of Patch 3.0.3, every Unique has at least one variable affix that rolls at a range. That variable roll matters more than the IP number on a Unique.

How Difficulty Affects What Drops

Item Power caps are tied to difficulty, not character level:

  • Normal difficulty — Non-Ancestral items only. IP ceiling ~850. Affixes roll in the lower value ranges. Good for leveling and early progression.

  • Torment I–IV (entry Torment) — Ancestral items begin dropping. IP up to 900. Affix ranges open up significantly. This is when gear starts to matter seriously.

  • Torment V–VIII (mid Torment) — Ancestral items at or near 900 become the standard. Expect GA I–II rolls to be common. GA III+ is high value here.

  • Torment IX–XII (pinnacle Torment) — Only the top tier of gear is worth keeping. Items should be Ancestral at or near 900 IP with GA III–IV affixes. Anything below GA II on a core stat is a replacement candidate.

What Changed from Season 12 to Season 13

Patch 3.0.3 raised both caps:

  • Non-Ancestral ceiling: ~750 → ~850

  • Ancestral ceiling: ~800 → ~900

If you have gear from Season 12 that you carried forward, its Item Power may be below the new ceiling — meaning equivalent gear from Season 13 can roll higher stats even at the same quality tier. This is worth factoring into upgrade decisions, especially if your Season 12 pieces are sitting at 780–800 IP.

When Item Power Stops Mattering

Once your item is at or near the cap for your difficulty tier, Item Power becomes irrelevant. At that point, the only things that matter are:

  • Which affixes rolled — are they the right stats for your build?

  • Greater Affix count and tier — GA I through GA IV scale exponentially. A GA IV is roughly 5× the value of a GA I on the same stat.

  • Socket count — 2-socket items are Runeword-ready. A 1-socket item cannot host both runes.

Two Ancestral items both sitting at 900 IP are not equal. The one with GA III on your core stat is worth far more than the one with GA I — even though the Item Power number is identical.

How StatVerdict Uses Item Power

When you scan an item in StatVerdict, the AI reads the Item Power from your screenshot and uses it as one input in the grade. Specifically:

  • Items well below the cap for your selected difficulty get flagged — not necessarily as bad items, but as ones you will likely replace as you push higher Torment tiers.

  • Items near or at the 900 Ancestral cap are evaluated on affix quality and Greater Affix tier rather than IP.

  • Mythic Uniques at 925 are evaluated on their variable affix roll quality — since the IP is always fixed, the roll on the variable affix is what determines grade.

  • Charms and Talismans are scored purely on affix relevance — Item Power does not apply to them.

Bottom Line

Season 13 caps are 850 for normal gear, 900 for Ancestral, 925 for Mythic Unique. These increased from Season 12, so old gear may be below the new ceiling. Once you hit the cap for your difficulty, stop chasing Item Power and start chasing Greater Affix tiers and build-relevant stats — that is where actual power gains live at endgame.
