How to Grade a Diablo 4 Unique in 60 Seconds
Learn to grade any Diablo 4 Unique fast. Read affixes like a pro, then confirm your call at statverdict.com in seconds.
You just cleared a Pandemonium Rupture, defeated a Realmwalker, and a Unique clattered onto the ground with that satisfying orange glow. Now comes the real question: is it a keeper, a crafting candidate, or salvage fodder? In Season 14, grading a Unique is faster than ever once you know what to look for — and I'll show you how to make that call in about 60 seconds flat. Then you can confirm your gut at statverdict.com in a couple more.
Start With the Two Guaranteed Affixes
The biggest shift in the Season of Death Awakening is that all Uniques now drop with 2 guaranteed affixes. That means every Unique has a baseline of relevant stats before you even glance at the random ones. This changes how you evaluate them: you're no longer praying for a good affix roll from scratch — you're deciding whether the guaranteed pair plus the variable slots add up to a real upgrade.
When you pick up a Unique, read those two guaranteed affixes first. On something like Tyrael's Might, the built-in damage reduction and barrier generation are always there — so your grade hinges on whether the remaining rolls (Maximum Life, Movement Speed, resistances) land where your build wants them. For a class-defining piece like Ramaladni's Magnum Opus on a Barbarian, the guaranteed affixes carry the item, and everything else is gravy.
Quick rule: if the two guaranteed affixes are core to your build, the item is already at least a B. From there, the variable affixes and rolls decide whether it climbs to S.
Reading Greater Affixes and Roll Ranges at a Glance
Greater Affixes are your grading shortcut. A Greater Affix comes pre-boosted (that little upward arrow next to the stat), and it rolls significantly higher than a standard affix — often the difference between a good item and a build-defining one. The more Greater Affixes stacked on the stats you actually care about, the higher the grade.
Here's how to read rolls fast without a spreadsheet:
- Count the Greater Affix arrows. Zero on relevant stats? C-tier at best. One on a core stat? Solid B. Two or three on your priority stats? You're looking at S territory.
- Eyeball the roll position. Most affixes display a range. If the number sits in the top third of that range, treat it as a high roll. Bottom third means you'll likely want to reroll it later.
- Prioritize by stat, not by count. A single Greater Affix on +Ranks to your key skill or Critical Strike Damage beats two Greater Affixes on stats your build ignores.
Remember: a Unique dripping with Greater Affixes on the wrong stats is still a mediocre Unique. Match the affixes to your damage buckets and defensive layers first, always.
Not sure whether that roll is actually high or if you're just excited? Drop a screenshot into Stat Verdict and it'll tell you exactly where each affix lands in its range — plus whether it fits your build.
Enchanting and Tempering: What to Reroll on Uniques and Mythics
Patch 3.1.0 unlocked something big: Enchanting now works on Uniques and Mythic Uniques. That means the variable affixes on a Unique are no longer locked — you can reroll a dead stat into something useful at the Occultist. This dramatically changes grading, because a Unique with one bad affix isn't garbage anymore; it's a B that's one Enchant away from an A.
When you're deciding what to reroll, follow this order:
- Never touch the guaranteed affixes — they're fixed and usually the whole point of the item.
- Reroll the lowest-value variable affix first. Resistances you're already capped on, Overpower Damage on a non-Overpower build, or a stat that's redundant with your other gear.
- Aim for your build's top-tier stats: +Skill Ranks, Cooldown Reduction, Critical Strike Chance/Damage, Vulnerable Damage, or your primary resource affix.
The killer detail for min-maxers: added affixes are max-rolled on Mythic Uniques. When you Enchant a Mythic, the new affix comes in at the top of its range automatically. That's why converting a strong Unique into a Mythic and then Enchanting is one of the most powerful gear plays in Season 14.
Don't forget Tempering, either. Uniques still take Tempering manuals, so factor in whether you can slap on a Greater Affix-tier temper (like +% skill damage or a movement/utility line) to push the item over the edge. A Unique that grades B on raw affixes can hit A once you account for tempering headroom.
Item Power Tiers: 850, 900 Ancestral, and the Mythic Threshold
Item Power is the final piece of your 60-second read. It sets the ceiling on your affix rolls and determines what crafting options you unlock.
- 850+ IP: This is the magic number. Any 850+ IP Unique can be crafted into a Mythic Unique via the Horadric Cube. If your Unique clears 850, it's a Mythic candidate — grade it with that upgrade path in mind.
- 900 IP (Ancestral): Ancestral Uniques roll with the highest affix values and the best shot at Greater Affixes. If you're chasing an endgame piece, 900 IP is where you want to land before investing Enchanting or Mythic materials.
Here's the practical takeaway: an 800 IP Unique with perfect affixes is nice, but it can't become a Mythic. An 855 IP Unique with mediocre rolls might actually grade higher in the long run because it's your ticket into the Mythic crafting pipeline — where those Enchanted affixes come in max-rolled.
And while we're on crafting: keep an eye out for Magic and Rare items with Greater Affixes. Those are Horadric Cube crafting candidates — never salvage them. The same instinct that helps you grade Uniques will save you from vendoring your best crafting mats.
Putting It All Together
Your 60-second checklist looks like this: read the two guaranteed affixes against your build, count the Greater Affix arrows on stats that matter, check the roll positions, note the Item Power (is it 850+? is it 900 Ancestral?), and factor in what you can Enchant or Temper to close the gap. If the guaranteed affixes fit and there's a Mythic path, you're holding something special.
Grading Uniques by hand gets faster every time you do it — but you don't have to trust your eyes alone. Once you've made your call, screenshot the item and paste it into statverdict.com for an instant S–F verdict, roll-range analysis, and build-specific advice. Practice the read, confirm the grade, and never salvage a keeper again. Now get back out there and close some Ruptures.
